NEW! 10+state Fibershed Exhibition!, Talks, Demos
Saturday October 19, 2024 9:00am - 5:00pm EDT
Fibershed organizations from around the country will display their region's product samples and demonstrate educational activities for all. Learn about what's happening nationwide from natural dyes to fiber production, soil regeneration to wastewater & waste wool!

Fibersheds coming from California, Ohio, North Carolina, Maryland, Louisiana, West Virginia, and all of New England.

Join the Fibersheds Saturday, October 21, 1:30-2:30PM for a talk on "Mapping A Fibershed One Stitch and One Color At A Time"
A fibershed is a geographic region connected by a network of fiber and natural dye producers. Many states have their own fibershed and each with a different mission to connect producers to designers and makers. For this exciting panel join artist, crafter and writer Katrina Rodabaugh, Connecticut Fibershed's Jennifer Duff, Botanical Colors' Communications Director Amy DuFault and Chesapeake Fibershed's Marian Bruno for a meaningful discussion on how mending and dyes are just a piece of this bigger puzzle.
Panel moderated by Lexi Fujii, Membership & Learning Coordinator from Fibershed headquarters in Northern California.

Farmer Tam, with the help of her children and community, have been cultivating a home with a heart for fiber animals of all species and breeds in a small New England town since 2001.  Their focus on breed specific fiber, by beloved flocks,  keeps Tamara and helpers busy year round.  The farm sells wool products such as yarns, felt, roving, and comforters and farm made soaps, home baked pies, fresh eggs and chicks, geese and lambs through farm markets, sheep + wool festivals and their online shop.  Tamara teaches Natural Dyeing, Baking, Soap Making and Farming/Homesteading Workshops episodically.  The farm hosts visits by appointment and workshops for learning homestead and fiber arts.  The latest development on the farm, since the purchase of foundation ewes in 2018, is the breed-up program of Valais Blacknose sheep.  Wing & A Prayer Farm is home to Vermont’s first pure blood Valais Blacknose Sheep and some of the first Valais Blacknose sheep in North America.

Iza Trapani | Signing her delightful children's books | Saturday 9:30 - 12:30
Saturday October 19, 2024 9:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Iza Trapani joins us with her wonderful books for children of all ages, from the traditional nursery rhymes Baa Baa Black Sheep and Mary Had a Little Lamb, to Gabe and Goon that helps younger children understand nighttime fears, and many more.

Iza was born in Warsaw, Poland, where she lived until she was seven years old. Her parents fostered a life-long appreciation for books, art, and music. Iza learned to read before she started school and was always encouraged to draw, even though she would take over the entire dining table with her papers and pencils.

When Iza was seven, her mother traveled to America to visit her sister. At the time, whole families were not allowed to leave Communist Poland, so Iza's mother took her, the youngest. Their visit turned into a permanent stay. Her mother remarried and hoped to bring Iza's brother and sister to the United States, but tragically, she died too soon. Iza moved to a children's home in Lodi, New Jersey, where she stayed until she was 16. During this time, Iza's father in Poland also passed away. It wasn't until after she married and became a U.S. citizen that Iza felt she could travel to Poland without fear of deportation. Twenty-five years passed before she was reunited with her siblings.

Over the years, Iza continued to draw and paint. She wanted more than anything to create children's picture books. Crossing paths with a turtle in the woods inspired her first book What Am I? An Animal Guessing Game. Since then Iza has written and illustrated several books for children including the best-selling Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; The Itsy Bitsy Spider; and Baa Baa Black Sheep.
Inspired by nature, children and animals, Iza has an endless wellspring of stories and ideas to share with young readers. She was once told that to be a good author a writer must know CPR—concise, precise, and rounded. In her picture books the illustrations play an integral part in enhancing and clarifying the text. It's a wonderful union of art and story with a fresh and interesting perspective.
Iza lives in the Hudson Valley of New York with her husband on their farm in a house that they designed. She has worked very hard for her success and feels blessed by the warm reception her books have received by readers young and old.

PANEL: "Mapping A Fibershed One Stitch and One Color At A Time"
Saturday October 19, 2024 1:30pm - 2:30pm EDT
"Mapping A Fibershed One Stitch and One Color At A Time"
A fibershed is a geographic region connected by a network of fiber and natural dye producers.

Keeping Americans warm for four centuries, wool has been an essential commodity from colonial times to the present. Its colorful and epic tale has impacted millions of lives, including artisans, inventors, immigrants, merchants, mill owners, millworkers, slaves, and Native Americans, to farmers and advertisers.

A story of technological and social change, marketing forces, and our choices as consumers, Wool: Unraveling an American Story of Artisans and Innovation is a must-read for anyone who has knitted (or worn!) socks, woven a piece of cloth, or curled up with a warm wool blanket.

There are more than 100 Illustrations, from historical to contemporary.
